**FBI Warns Gmail and Outlook Users of Rising Medusa Ransomware Threat**

by - March 17, 2025

The **FBI** and **U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA)** have issued a urgent warning to users of **Gmail** and **Outlook** about the growing threat of the **Medusa ransomware gang**. Active since 2021, this cybercriminal group has targeted over **300 victims** across industries like healthcare, education, and technology, encrypting data and demanding ransom payments.

Medusa operates through **phishing campaigns**—deceptive emails that trick users into clicking malicious links—and exploits unpatched software vulnerabilities. Once inside a system, they encrypt data and threaten to leak sensitive information if payments aren’t made.

To protect against such attacks, the FBI and CISA recommend:

🔹 Using **long, unique passwords** for all accounts.

🔹 Enabling **multifactor authentication (MFA)** for webmail, VPNs, and critical systems.

🔹 Keeping **operating systems, software, and firmware updated**.

This warning underscores the importance of cybersecurity vigilance in an increasingly digital world.
